Weight Loss Clinic
If your pet could talk they would ask you to do whatever it takes to enjoy your company for as long as they possibly can. There are many things you can’t control, but there is ONE thing you can do that can make a significant difference to your pets longevity…and their impact on your hip pocket. This ONE thing is keeping your pet within a healthy weight range.
For more information on obesity in pets, and the ways to manage it, see our ‘Obesity in Pets‘ webpage.
Why do I need to control my pet’s weight?
Research shows that over one third of pets that visit the vet are classed as overweight. An overweight pet may be at increased risk of the following problems:
- Osteo-articular disease
- Cardiac and respiratory disease
- Diabetes
- Lower immunity
- Lethargy
- Pain, particularly if the joints become damaged
- Increased risk associated with surgery and anaesthesia
- Shorter life expectancy
- Poor coat and skin quality
What are the signs that my pet is overweight?
Your pet may be overweight if you notice any of these changes:
- Unable to feel the ribs without applying pressure
- Reluctance to exercise
- Need to loosen the collar periodically
- Obsession over food
The good news is that you and your pet don’t have to take the weight loss journey alone. The staff at Nicklin Way Veterinary Surgery are not only able to assist; we LOVE to encourage pets to be in the best shape they can be.
(Note: it is recommended that your pet be checked by a veterinarian prior to joining the Weight Loss Clinic to assess for any underlying health problems.)
What is the Weight Loss Clinic?
The Weight Loss Clinic is a free service run by our trained veterinary nurses, and designed to provide advice and motivation about your pets weight loss. During your initial consultation, a veterinary nurse will establish a healthy eating plan suitable for your pet, as well as providing helpful advice on topics such as exercise and how to resist begging behaviour.
It is recommended that free follow-up consultations be scheduled at either fortnightly or monthly intervals where we will weigh your pet to check that they are losing weight in an ideal range. The eating plan can be adjusted if required.
